The auto market is going through a rough phase but that hasn’t stopped the manufacturers from launching new cars. Cars from different manufacturers are launching giving the existing cars a tough competition. Here are the most-awaited new cars in India for the year 2020.

Mercedes- Benz GLB

Mercedes-Benz GLB, the seven-seat SUV is expected to be introduced in the Indian market and will be positioned between the GLA and the GLC. The third row of seating is likely to be optional. In terms of dimensions, the Mercedes-Benz GLB measures 4,634mm in length, 1,834mm in width and 1,658mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,829mm. With the third-row seats, the SUV will barely offer any boot space. With the third row down, it offers 560-litres of boot space. The SUV will get familiar interior elements in the form of all-new MBUX dual-screen system, turbine-like air-con vents and more. The estimated price is Rs. 40 lakhs.

Mechanically, the Mercedes-Benz GLB is expected to be offered with two four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines – a 1.3-litre that produces 161bhp (GLB 200), a 2.0-litre that generates 218bhp (GLB 250). The diesel version is expected to get a 2.0-litre engine which will be available in either 148bhp (GLB 200d) or 188bhp (GLB 220d) guise. All except the base GLB 200 which gets the old 7G-DCT, the rest will use Mercedes’ new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The model might also offer a 4Matic all-wheel drive option.

Mahindra Thar 2020

Easily the most awaited car in India, Mahindra Thar was supposed to launch at the auto expo 2020 but some technical delays have pushed the launch to the later half of 2020. The Mahindra Thar 2020 model will be powered by a newly developed 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, which will be compliant with upcoming BSVI emission norms. While the original profile will remain intact, the new model will have modern design elements and features. Ever since its launch in 2010, the Thar is admired by enthusiasts all over the country. This iconic 4X4 has been favoured for its robust body-built and excellent off-road capabilities. Thar has had a cult following, the expectations for this edition are very high. This suggests that the next model will continue to offer excellent off-road abilities. The price of Thar is Rs. 10 lakhs.

Honda City

The fifth-generation Honda City is expected to be launched in India by this year. It adopts design themes introduced by cars like the Civic and the Amaze and adorn them over a larger body. Apart from the new design, the City is expected to get new premium features and rumoured to get new mild-hybrid and diesel-CVT powertrains. Prices are expected to remain similar to the model it replaces, starting from Rs 10 lakh and costing up to Rs 15 lakh. The new City will continue to compete against the likes of Maruti Ciaz, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Vento and the Hyundai Verna.

It is also clear that the new City has taken a lot of design cues from the larger Civic sedan. LED headlights flanking a large ‘Wing’ chrome/black grille insert, a clamshell bonnet, larger air dams and stretched LED taillights that add a lot of flair and character to the new City’s design. The improved space along with an all-new cabin design should attract a lot of attention from potential customers. The all-new City will be powered by a familiar set of engines which have been modified to comply with stricter BS6 emission norms. Honda may add a mild-hybrid system to the petrol engine to comply with the norms better, while a diesel-CVT combination may be added to cater to those looking for efficiency and convenience in a single package.

Audi e-tron

Audi has unveiled the entry-level e-tron 50 which comes with a smaller 71kWh battery pack capable of producing 312PS of power and 540Nm of torque. It provides a range of 300km with 0-100kmph coming up in 7 seconds. The SUV claims to offer a fine balance between sport, family and leisure. The key factor for its sporty character and outstanding transverse dynamics is the low and central position at which the drive components are installed. The battery system is located between the axles in the form of a flat, broad block beneath the passenger compartment. the expected price is Rs 1 crore.

In terms of dimensions, the e-tron measures 4,901 millimeters in length, 1,935 millimeters wide and has a height of 1,616 millimeters. The five-seat SUV has a total luggage capacity of 660 liters. Two electric motors drive the electric SUV powerfully, free of emissions, and almost silently, with a system output of up to 300kW and 664Nm (489.7 lb-ft) of torque. Top speed is an electronically-limited 200 km/h (124 mph).

BMW 8 Series

The BMW 8 Series is the spiritual successor to the 6 Series. The model is currently offered in four variants for the global market including the 8 Series Coupe, 8 Series Cabriolet (Convertible), 8 Series Gran-Coupe and the M8. The estimated price is Rs. 1 crore.

The BMW 8 Series is manufactured at the company’s plant in Dingolfing, Gemany. The model is based on the CLAR architecture platform and uses lightweight construction, a process that involves a mix of various materials such as steel, aluminium, plastic and carbon-fibre in the body-shell.

Internationally, the BMW 8 Series is available with two engine options including a 4.4-litre, eight-cylinder petrol unit and a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel unit. The former is tuned to produce 530bhp and 680 Nm of torque while the latter produces 320bhp and 680 Nm of torque. Both the engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard.


The Coronavirus pandemic that has swept the entire world and gives no sign to falter has been negatively affecting every possible sector of an economy. The Automobile sector which was already going through a slump last year is now in even more trouble as the virus has caused a complete lockdown of the country.
